I am a structural engineering and mathematics lady. I used to be an endurance cardio queen, but I'm changing my fitness focus on strength training, powerlifting, and low impact HIIT cardio.

We’re healthy. We’re happy. That should be enough. If not for this blog we’d have no reason to not feel thrilled and content with exactly where we are right now – no comparisons.
Coming to terms with your limitations and accepting them is hard. Learning to not care if others accept them is harder. We’ve both damaged our bodies in the past to the point that we’ll never look as good as the leading lights of paleo. And that is OK! It does not mean that we don’t have our own perspective, our own voice to add to the conversation. Nor do your flaws mean that you can’t join in either. So what if haters gonna hate? Think about the overall positive impact that’s being had, instead.

Can we all agree that this system of living has benefits for everyone, not just the super athletes at the annual Crossfit Games? Then let’s accept all our brethren in the movement, regardless of size and shape. Let’s stop trolling each others’ inboxes and Facebook walls, or posting on Reddit and Paleo Hacks. If you wouldn’t say it to their face – don’t say it! There’s room for a variety of voices in this movement, because in order for the world to get on board – we need identifiable people all around.
We’re ignoring the chatter and criticism for us and our book not optimizing performance and our paleo(ish) treats being replications of neolithic disease. Let’s all drop the in-fighting and start figuring out how we can save the world – the general public – one person at a time. In the meantime, Stacy and I will continue to be the fattest people in paleo. We’ll continue to try to inspire people by putting ourselves out there and braving jerks who clearly aren’t yet happy and fulfilled with their own lives.

Paleo alternative to ice cream, and it actually tastes good. Unfortunately the only market nearby that sells it is Whole Foods, and it’s also a bit pricey. Luckily the paleo diet has greatly curbed my sweet tooth, so I’ll probably rarely crave this.

What an awesome idea, I need to try this!
My friend and I are both happily Primal and generally find the program very easy to follow, until That time of the month rolls around. We’ve both noticed that our carb cravings are significantly stronger than before we went Primal. The PMS symptoms themselves aren’t a big deal, it’s just a feeling of never being sated unless a hearty serving of carbs is consumed, and regular Primal favorites are unappealing. Any idea what might be going on? Thanks.

During menstruation, a woman’s serotonin levels are at their lowest. And because carbohydrates (via insulin) increase the availability of the premier amino acid precursor to serotonin (tryptophan), craving carbs during your period is totally natural. It probably just means that you are low in serotonin (which, according to the research, you likely are) and your body wants to make more of it.
As for whether or not this is problematic, sports science offers another clue: during the mid-luteal phase (the two weeks leading up to menstruation) when estrogen dominates, the potential for glycogen storage is maximized. What that means is that for two weeks before your period rolls around, your muscles are primed to accept and store carbohydrate as energy (rather than as fat). I wouldn’t suggest you give in to the carb cravings as they typically manifest – muffins, cakes, pizza, cookies – but this might be a better time to eat a few Primal-friendly sources of carbs. Think sweet potatoes, white potatoes, yams, squash, and various types of fruit. Oh, and high-quality dark chocolate, if that’s your thing. The fact that your cravings only surface during your period tells me that you’re in a good place, nutritionally, and that these cravings are physiologically normal and expected.
I made paleo mini “egg pizzas” last night. Turned out delicious!
Here’s the recipe, in case you’re interested in making them. It’s quick and simple.
Using Pinterest to Organize Food Recipes
My boyfriend uses Pinterest to organize his favorite food recipes. I post some on his too. Some are paleo, some aren’t. My current wants: paleo carrot cake pancakes, bulgogi banh mi, Japanese scotch egg, salmon bulgogi tacos with blueberry habanero salsa, bacon & crab bread pudding eggs benedict. Check it out. http://pinterest.com/shaunpark/food/
Carbs Are Killing You: Eating Fat Doesn’t Make You Fat [Infographic]
Fat’s got a bad rap. We’ve heard that curbing our consumption of fatty foods will help you lose weight. We’ve reduced our fat intake, but obesity is still thriving. So what gives? The answer: It’s not fat’s fault. Instead, diets rich in carbohydrates have been secretly storing fat, slowly growing our waistlines and our obesity epidemic. Don’t believe it? This infographic from Massive Health shows how it happens.
